The BEST Awards: A Look at Programs Established, Outcomes, Challenges, and What’s Next

In 2013, after studying the state of the biomedical research workforce and the training provided to prepare future workers, the National Institutes of Health Office of Strategic Coordination developed a Common Fund initiative “to seek out, identify and support bold and innovative approaches designed to broaden graduate and postdoctoral training.” The goal of the Broadening Experiences in Scientific Training (BEST) awards was to expand and complement training and workforce development programs in such a way as to expose PhD graduate students and postdocs to a more diverse number of career options available and create a more robust biomedical, behavioral, social and clinical research enterprise. The focus of many institutional programs had always been to prepare trainees for a career in academia, but this opportunity allowed institutions to reflect a wider berth of career outcomes and bring attention to other research-intensive and research-related career paths outside of the ivory tower. Ten institutions were selected for the first round of awards, followed by another seven in the second round in 2014. This session will provide a look at several of the institutional awardees and examine the programs developed, challenges encountered, best practices discovered, and gaps still to be filled.
