The following information is offered in an attempt to help international postdocs understand the basics of how to secure and maintain their immigration status during their research stay in the United States. In no way is this information to be interpreted as individual advice, as there are many variables involved in this process and the law itself is subject to change. In addition, international postdocs should consult with their host institutions both to keep updated with new developments in U.S. law and policy and to ensure your own actions correspond with institutional policies. However, the following generalizations have been compiled for your use as a result of surveying many institutions that are host to international postdocs. If you are unsure how to proceed, you should consult with your home institution’s international office in the United States or with an immigration attorney.
